Trauma-Informed ABA for RBTs: ABCs and Beyond

Registered Behavior Technicians (RBTs) are taught to focus on behaviors that are observable and measurable and monitor the ABCs (antecedent, behavior, consequence). Sometimes it can feel like trauma-informed care doesn't fit into this model. In reality, the two approaches work very well together. When we understand that difficult or stressful life experiences (called trauma events) can affect the ABC chain, we can engage in ABA therapy that is more compassionate and more effective. By treating trauma events as setting events (things that make certain behaviors more likely) we can better support all of our clients, including children in foster care, students in school programs, and individuals who have experienced major life changes, such as the COVID-19 pandemic. In this workshop, you'll expand on your knowledge of ABC behavior chains, learn how trauma can influence behavior, and how to implement trauma informed antecedent and consequence interventions. 
 
Objectives
In this training:
Attendees will discuss, define, and review the basics of ABCs (Antecedent, Behavior, Consequences) as well as Setting Events
Attendees will define Trauma Events and the definitions of Trauma Informed Care and how it applies to ABA
Attendees will observe, discuss, and define procedures to implement Trauma Informed antecedent and consequence interventions
Attendees will observe, discuss, and define ways to teach trauma informed replacement behaviors
